Poem-a-thon: call for speakers

Saturday 18th November 2017, 7pm

Mrs Howard Hall, Letchworth Garden City

A charity that helps almost 6,000 people locally each year is holding a sponsored poetry event to raise much needed funds.

A poetry event with a difference

Open to all levels of experience and none; whatever your age, interest and background we invite you to take up a poetic challenge and seek sponsorship to raise funds for Citizens Advice North Hertfordshire (based in Hitchin, Letchworth & Royston).

For example, this could include:

  • read one or more poems of your choice;
  • read one or more poems you have written;
  • recite a poem you have learnt by heart;
  • or share another lyric-based offering.

Speakers will have up to 8 minutes to introduce and speak their poems. The event will be promoted locally and free of charge to attend. Speakers will need to generate sponsorship using our JustGiving event page.

Two free workshops are being run to support event speakers:

  • Sat 21st Oct 1-4pm – How to Learn a Poem by Heart

Even if you read a poem, knowing it really well helps you relax and speak it with greater confidence. Learn useful strategies and put them into practice.

  • Sat 4th Nov 1-4pm – How to Speak a Poem with Presence

For nervous speakers, those less confident with speaking poetry or those who want to speak with confidence. Learn and practice in a friendly environment.

Both workshops will run in Letchworth, facilitated by Rionach Aiken (Citizens Advice North Herts CEO and poet). Places limited!

I was nervous before the event but enjoyed the process of choosing a poem and reading it on the night. The diverse range of poems was fascinating: with poets bringing along their own work and with some poems being written especially for the event.” Sue
