Loan Sharks: The Hidden Dangers of Illegal Money Lending

Loan sharks don’t always look like criminals. They often seem friendly and trustworthy at first. It could be a neighbour, another parent at school, a family friend, or someone recommended to you.

This makes illegal money lending hard to spot — and even harder to escape.

But the risks are serious. Borrowing from a loan shark can quickly lead to stress, fear, and loss of control.

Citizens Advice North Hertfordshire is here to help you understand the dangers, spot warning signs, and find safe, confidential support.

What is a Loan Shark?

A loan shark is someone who lends money without permission from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

Legal lenders must follow strict rules. Loan sharks ignore these rules completely.

They may:

  • Charge very high or unclear interest
  • Change repayment terms without warning
  • Make you pay more and more over time
  • Use pressure, threats, or intimidation

Important: If you borrow from a loan shark, you are not committing a crime — the lender is.

Why People Use Loan Sharks

Money problems can happen to anyone. People may turn to loan sharks when:

  • Bills are rising
  • Income drops or stops
  • Benefits are delayed
  • Unexpected costs come up

Loan sharks often offer quick cash with no checks or paperwork. This can seem helpful at first — but it can quickly become dangerous.

The Risks of Loan Sharks

Borrowing from a loan shark can get out of control very quickly. You may experience:

  • Constant calls, texts, or visits
  • Increasing debt with no clear explanation
  • Pressure to borrow even more money
  • Threats or intimidation
  • Feelings of fear, stress, or isolation

Some people are threatened or have personal belongings taken as security.

🚫 No one should feel unsafe because of debt — help is available.

Warning Signs of Illegal Money Lending

You may be dealing with a loan shark if:

  • There is no written agreement
  • You don’t know how much you owe
  • You are asked to repay far more than you borrowed
  • Your bank card, passport, or valuables are taken
  • You are threatened if you miss a payment

If this sounds familiar, it’s important to get support as soon as possible.
