Volunteer Spotlight: Maisie

Maisie is studying Law and chose to spend a placement year with Citizens Advice North Herts before returning to university this September.

Keen to gain practical legal experience while making a positive difference in the community, Maisie felt CANH was the perfect opportunity.

“I also wanted to make an impact in a local community and understand the problems that impact people every day.”

Over the past year, Maisie has successfully trained as a Generalist Adviser and volunteered with us every week, supporting clients through a wide range of issues. Her role has involved answering enquiry emails, speaking with clients to understand their circumstances, and helping people attending drop-in appointments.

One of the biggest benefits of volunteering has been the confidence she has developed.

“I am a lot more confident on the phone, and I can walk into a room confidently despite not knowing what they need help with. I have also learnt how to ask the right questions to get the information we need to help clients.”

Alongside building valuable skills for her future legal career, Maisie has found volunteering incredibly rewarding.

“People come to CANH when they are in need and to do a little bit to take stress out of someone’s life makes a big difference.”

Her advice for anyone considering volunteering is simple:

“Give it a go. Everyone is helpful and you will learn new things every day! It makes a big impact on your local community and you will support those who need it most.”

Outside of her studies and volunteering, Maisie plays football for Letchworth Eagles Women and recently captained the team after returning home from university.

Maisie’s placement with us has now come to an end. We have loved having her as part of the team and are incredibly proud of all she has achieved during her year with Citizens Advice North Herts.

Reflecting on her experience, Maisie said:

“I’ve really enjoyed spending my placement at Citizens Advice. Everyone has been so kind and willing to help me. It has been interesting to see what I have learnt studying law work in real-life situations and understand how we can help the local community. Thank you to everyone at North Herts Citizens Advice for the support over the past year.”

Thank you, Maisie, for your hard work, dedication and commitment. We wish you every success as you continue your studies and future career.
