Do I Need Travel Insurance?

It might feel like an extra expense, but travel insurance can save you from major stress and unexpected costs if something goes wrong. It protects you against everything from medical emergencies to cancellations, delays and lost luggage.

Why Travel Insurance Matters – and How It Can Protect You

As summer approaches, many local residents will be looking forward to holidays abroad – whether it’s a weekend city break or a long-awaited family escape. But before you go, don’t overlook travel insurance.

It might feel like an extra expense, but travel insurance can save you from major stress and unexpected costs if something goes wrong. It protects you against everything from medical emergencies to cancellations, delays and lost luggage.

What does travel insurance cover?

Policies vary, so always read the small print. Most travel insurance includes:

  • Medical treatment abroad – including emergency care, hospital stays, and return travel to the UK
  • Trip cancellations or delays – such as illness, injury, or travel disruption
  • Lost or stolen belongings – including luggage, passports, or valuables
  • Disruption – caused by events like strikes or natural disasters

Some policies include cover for activities like skiing, hiking or scuba diving – so make sure your policy matches your plans. Also check for exclusions and claim limits, especially for high-value items or events like

pandemics.

Travelling in Europe?

A valid EHIC or GHIC card gives you access to some state healthcare, but it doesn’t cover private medical care, repatriation, or non-medical issues. Travel insurance is still essential.

Don’t delay – and be honest

Buy your policy as soon as you book your trip. That way, you’re covered if you have to cancel before departure due to illness or emergency.

Be sure to declare any existing medical conditions. If you don’t, your insurer could refuse to pay out later – even for something unrelated. Always include conditions like asthma, diabetes or high blood pressure, even if they’re well managed.

Choosing the right cover

Look for at least £1 million medical cover for Europe, and £2 million for worldwide travel. Make sure your policy includes a 24/7 emergency helpline.

Don’t just choose the cheapest option – compare what’s covered and pick the one that fits your trip best.

Peace of mind for your trip

Medical care abroad can be extremely costly. A hospital stay in the USA could run into tens of thousands of pounds. Travel insurance protects your health, finances and peace of mind – helping you enjoy your holiday worry-free.
