At Citizens Advice North Hertfordshire, we’re seeing more people worried about messages claiming to be about the Winter Fuel Payment. You’re right to be cautious. Government figures show reports of scam texts jumped by 153% at the end of September.
Key facts to keep you safe
- You don’t need to apply. If you’re eligible, your Winter Fuel Payment is paid automatically into your bank account.
- The government will never ask for your bank details by text. Any text asking you to “confirm” or “update” details is a scam.
- Payment timing: eligible pensioners get a letter in October/November confirming the amount, and payments are made from mid-November through December.
- Got a suspicious text? Don’t reply, don’t click links. Forward it to 7726 (free of charge) so your phone provider can block the number, then delete it.
How these scams work (and why they’re convincing)
Fraudsters pose as officials “processing your application” or “speeding up payment”. They use urgent language to rush you into clicking a link or sharing personal information. The hook feels timely because it arrives just before the genuine payment window – exactly when people expect updates. That timing is deliberate: it lowers your guard.
Simple steps to protect yourself
- Pause and check: Genuine Winter Fuel Payments are automatic – no action needed. If a message tells you to act now or risk losing money, that’s a red flag.
- Use trusted channels only: If you want to double-check your situation, go directly to GOV.UK by typing the address into your browser, or use a phone number you already trust (not one from the message).
- If you’ve shared details: Contact your bank immediately to secure your account. Keep records of what happened.
- Tell someone: Forward scam texts to 7726. The more reports, the quicker providers can block them.
