You’re Not Alone: Citizens Advice North Herts Supports the Stop Loan Sharks Campaign
At Citizens Advice North Hertfordshire (CANH), we see first-hand the devastating impact illegal money lenders can have on individuals and families. That’s why we’re proud to support the national Stop Loan Sharks campaign which runs from 19th – 25th May and share an important message: you are not alone – and help is here, whenever you’re ready.
Being in debt to a loan shark isn’t just a financial issue. It’s often a terrifying, isolating experience that leaves people feeling trapped and powerless. Borrowers can spiral into a cycle of fear, intimidation and emotional control, often blaming themselves and feeling too ashamed to ask for help.
One borrower, when asked to imagine a ladder out of the hole he was in, responded: “I can’t even see the ladder.” That sense of hopelessness is sadly all too common.
But there is a way out – and Stop Loan Sharks exists to offer that lifeline. Their team provides confidential, compassionate support tailored to each person’s needs. Whether you want to talk, text, email, or meet in person, their trained officers are ready to listen – without judgement or pressure.
We know from our own work at Citizens Advice how hard it can be to take that first step. In fact, national figures show it can take up to four years for someone to come forward. And nearly half of those who do report struggling with their mental health as a result of the abuse they’ve faced. These are not just numbers – they represent real people, many of whom live in our local community.
That’s why we want to say clearly: you deserve support. You deserve to feel safe. And you do not have to face this alone.
