Attendance Allowance

Could you be entitled to Attendance Allowance? If you’re of state pensions age, and have a disability or illness that makes it hard to look after yourself – you might be able to claim Attendance Allowance.

What is Attendance Allowance?

It is an additional monetary benefit for people over State Pension Age, who need more help with health and personal care needs and/or physical or mental disability.

Attendance Allowance isn’t means tested so it doesn’t matter what other money you have coming in. It doesn’t matter how much you have in savings either – there’s no limit.

It won’t affect your state pension and you can claim it if you’re still working and earning money.

The amount you get will depend on how much help you need – you could get £76.70 or £114.60 a week.  Attendance  Allowance is paid directly into your bank, building society or credit union account. You can spend the money however you like – it could help you stay independent in your own home for longer.

Who is Eligible for Attendance Allowance?

  • The claimant must be over State Pension Age and….
  • Have a physical disability, a mental disability (including learning difficulties and dementia), or a health condition
  • Their disability or health condition is severe enough that they need help caring for themselves or someone to supervise them, for their own or someone else’s safety
  • The have needed that help for at least 6 months

They do not have to have someone caring for them in order to claim.

There are some other UK residency and benefit rules that apply.  Please see the helpful links section for more information
