Applying for a Blue Badge in North Herts: what you need to know
A Blue Badge can make travel easier by allowing eligible people to park closer to shops, GP surgeries, workplaces and other essential services. If you live in North Hertfordshire and your health or disability makes walking difficult or unsafe, it may be worth applying.
Who will definitely qualify?
You can qualify automatically if you are registered blind or severely sight impaired, or if you receive certain mobility-related benefits. This includes Personal Independence Payment (PIP) where you score 8+ points under “Moving Around”, or 10 points under “planning and following a journey” where you cannot undertake any journey due to overwhelming psychological distress. You may also qualify if you receive the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA), the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement, or a qualifying benefit through the Armed Forces Compensation scheme.
Who might qualify?
You may still be eligible if you drive and have a severe disability in both arms, can’t walk or find it very difficult to walk (including due to psychological distress), are a parent or carer applying for a child with a health condition, are terminally ill (supported by an SR1 form or medical evidence), or are a constant risk to yourself or others in traffic or car parks. The council may contact you for more information and may ask you to attend an appointment.
What to prepare before you apply
Have clear scans or photos of ID (passport, driving licence or birth certificate) and proof of address dated within the last 12 months (utility bill, bank statement or council tax bill). If relevant, have your latest PIP or DLA decision letter, plus medical evidence (letters/reports and a medication list with doses). You’ll also need a recent colour photo, your National Insurance number, and (if renewing) your current Blue Badge number and expiry date.
A Blue Badge in Hertfordshire costs £10, is usually issued for up to three years, and typically arrives within 4–6 weeks. Renew at least six weeks before expiry.
