The Energy Price Cap is expected to increase again in January. If you’re currently on a standard variable rate energy tariff, switching supplier or tariff could help you save money this winter.
Switching energy supplier or tariff
You might be able to save money by changing your energy deal.
You can:
- change to a different tariff with your current supplier
- move to a new energy supplier
A tariff is the price you pay for your gas and electricity.
Before you switch
Look at a recent energy bill or your online account. Check:
- your supplier’s name
- the name of your tariff
- when your deal ends
- whether there is a fee for leaving early
If you have a fixed deal, you can usually switch without paying an exit fee in the last 49 days before it ends.
Compare deals
Use comparison websites to look at different tariffs.
Check:
- how much the tariff is likely to cost
- whether there is an exit fee
- how long the deal lasts
- how you will pay
- whether it works with your meter
Look at more than one comparison website if you can.
How to switch
- Choose a new tariff or supplier.
- Contact the new supplier.
- The new supplier will arrange the switch.
- You have 14 days to change your mind.
- Take a meter reading on the day you switch.
Your old supplier should send your final bill within six weeks. If you are in credit, they should refund the money.
