Volunteer Spotlight: Jackie

Celebrating Volunteers’ Week: Jackie’s Story

As part of Volunteers’ Week, Citizens Advice North Hertfordshire (CANH) is proud to celebrate the incredible contribution of our volunteers – and to encourage more local people to get involved.

Jackie Miller, one of our brilliant Community Engagement and Communications Volunteers, has lived in Letchworth since childhood. After taking early retirement from a long career in teaching to care for her elderly parents, Jackie found herself looking for a new way to give back. She discovered volunteering with CANH and hasn’t looked back since.

“CANH seemed the ideal opportunity,” Jackie explains. “It’s a great way to help the community, learn new things, and be part of a supportive team.”

Jackie now volunteers several days a week, supporting our communications and engagement work. “One of the best things about the role is the flexibility – some days I’m in the office, and some days I work from home depending on what needs doing,” she says.

Beyond learning new skills – especially in technology and social media – Jackie says the biggest benefit has been becoming part of a welcoming and collaborative team. “Everyone brings different strengths, and there’s so much encouragement to grow in your role.”

CANH offers a wide range of rewarding volunteer roles for people of all ages and backgrounds. One of the most vital is that of Adviser – supporting local people with issues like housing, benefits, debt, and employment. Full training is provided, and our adviser roles are professional, structured, and supported by experienced supervisors. They’re a great opportunity to build new skills, boost confidence, and make a real impact.

Other volunteer roles include:

  • Fundraising Volunteers – helping organise local fundraisers
  • Community Engagement Volunteers – help raise awareness of our services by supporting outreach events, sharing information in the community, and connecting local people with the advice and support we offer.
  • Research and Campaigns Volunteers – using local insight to influence national change
  • Reception and Admin Volunteers – providing a warm welcome and keeping things running smoothly behind the scenes
