Volunteer Spotlight: Jane Porter

Reaching Rural Communities

Jane Porter, from the village of Ashwell, has always had a strong sense of community. Since retiring last autumn from her role as a parish clerk, Jane has continued to stay active and connected by volunteering with Citizens Advice North Hertfordshire (CANH) in their Rural Outreach team.

Her role is wonderfully varied – from distributing posters and leaflets to chatting with local residents and community groups about the support CANH can offer. “It’s all about spreading the word,” Jane explains. “I help people understand what CANH does, how to find useful information, and how to contact the right person when more detailed advice is needed.”

You’ll often find Jane at the Baldock Library drop-in sessions on Wednesday mornings, helping people navigate the CANH website or signposting them to services that might help. “Sometimes that’s all someone needs  –  just a bit of direction. But if it’s more complex, we explain how they can speak with an adviser.”

Jane also takes time to build links with village groups, often attending community sessions in person. “It’s a great way to explain what we do face to face,” she says. She also supports larger community events like the Baldock Street Fair, working with the team on the CANH publicity stand.

What does Jane enjoy most about volunteering? “All the people at CANH are lovely to work with. They do such a worthwhile and professional job, and it’s good to be part of something that really makes a difference.”

For anyone considering volunteering, Jane has a clear message: “The roles are flexible and varied, and you really feel your contribution is appreciated. The support is great too.”

CANH offers a range of volunteer roles to suit different skills and interests – from advisers and administrators to campaigners, digital assistants, and outreach volunteers like Jane. Whatever your background, there’s a place for you to get involved and make a difference.

When she’s not volunteering, Jane enjoys reading (particularly history, travel and architecture), pottering in her garden, walking, and tracing her family tree – a hobby she’s had since her teens. She adds, “Thanks to everyone at CANH for being so welcoming – it really makes a difference.”
